The exercise of institutional strategic planning tends to take two extremes - either the Plan is in the heads of the leadership or there is a word-filled document that is produced to satisfy the desires of external bodies. I have seen the blank stares at a SWOT Analysis and read 200 pages of nothing.
Somewhere in the middle is the candid, introspective, yet forward thinking idea for planning strategically at the institutional level that goes beyond the required student achievement benchmarks and paralysis of analysis.
Here's a thought - maybe if the time had been taken to assess institutional threats that have been compounded by the pandemic and the weaknesses that were hidden under layers of strong student enrollment, this "new day" in higher education wouldn't be one of looming doom.
